The Silver Spring Takoma Thunderbolts could not overcome one bad inning as they succumbed to the Gaithersburg Giants 5-3, on July 20th at Criswell Automotive Field.
For both teams, the starting pitchers were exceptional. On the T-Bolts side, En-Sih Huang (National Taiwan UPES), went 6 innings, allowing 4 runs, with only 1 being earned, and striking out 4. For the Giants, Eric Brodkowitz (Yale) went 6 innings as well, allowing 2 runs (2 earned), and striking out 3.
The T-Bolts jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first off of Brodkowitz. Leadoff hitter Zachary Racusin (Marist), launched a double on the second pitch, and after advancing to third, scored on Steven Paredes’s (Lindsey Wilson) groundout.
Once again, the early lead was one they could not hold, as crucial mistakes allowed for the Giants to take the lead in the bottom of tbe second. A T-Bolts error allowed for Giants third basemen Chris Van Meter’s (James Madison) single to score the first run of the inning, and for Derek Scheible’s (Texas State University) single to score the final two runs of the inning, all unearned of of Huang.
The T-Bolts would cut into the Giants lead in the top of the fourth, when T-Bolts catcher Paul Burmeester (Catholic) smashed a home run off of Brodkowitz.
In the sixth inning, another T-Bolt error allowed for another Scheible single to score a run, an important insurance run for the Giants. The Giants added another run in the seventh when Drew Aherne (Lafayette) scored on a Trey Martinez (Towson) single.
In the ninth, the T-Bolts attempted to comeback, coming out of the gate strong, After Brody Cook’s (VCU) walk and reaching second on a wild pitch, he scored on Tyler Coleman’s (Montgomery College Germantown) double, bringing the score to 5-3. However, the rally ended when Nick Dunn grounded out to the second basemen.
