In a pitcher’s duel, the Silver Spring-Takoma Thunderbolts handed the Gaithersburg Giants their fourth loss of the season 3-2, on Tuesday, June 9th, at Criswell Automotive Field.
T-Bolts pitcher Conrad Wozniak (Maryland Baltimore County), went 8 strong innings pitched. Wozniak struck out 6 while giving up 2 runs (1 earned), with 5 hits and 2 walks.
The T-Bolts were got the first runs of the game in the third inning, getting to Giants pitcher Connor Staskey (Maryland Baltimore County) in the third inning. Using three Giants errors, the T-Bolts plated two runs. After Kyle Conger (Belmont) and Zachary Racusin (Marist) got on base from an error and walk, respectively, Racusin stole home for the first run of the game, and Conger scored using an error by the second baseman.
The Giants answered in the bottom of the fourth inning, when an error by Conger allowed for John Mazza (Maryland College Park) to reach base and come home on Trey Martinez’s (Towson) single, to bring the game to 2-1.
The T-Bolts added on an important insurance run in the eighth inning, when Steven Paredes (Lindsey Wilson) singled, stole second and moved to third on a Nick Spadafino (Delaware) single. After the Giants brought in a new pitcher, the T-Bolts Tom Ruddy (Yale) came on as a pinch runner and brought home Paredes for the 3-1 lead.
Wozniak wouldn’t face much trouble until the eighth. Drew Aherne (Lafayette College) used a single to start the inning, and Casey Saverio (East Stroudsburg U) drew a 10 pitch walk and moved Aherne to scoring position. Wozniak walked Giants center fielder Derek Scheible (Texas State University) to put Aherne at third for Mazza, who would use a fielder’s choice to bring home Aherne. With the score 3-2, Wozniak induced a flyout to end the inning.
Holding the one run lead in the ninth, T-Bolts pitcher Connor Tagg (Case Western Reserve University) pitched a hitless ninth with two strikeouts to earn the save.
The T-Bolts (2-2) next take on the Baltimore Dodgers (0-3), on Wednesday, with Darrien Ragins (Delaware State) pitching for the T-Bolts, against Derrick Sylve (Holmes JC).
